The badge<br \/>\non my father&#8217;s chest worn<br \/>\nnot to name authority but<br \/>\nto measure exposure, the point<br \/>\nat which his daily risk<\/p>\n<p>might trip him up. When he drove the hills<br \/>\ntoward home the desert turned<br \/>\nunder him, sage and sand<br \/>\nground to dust, rocks overtaken by a violet glow.<br \/>\nAll the while minerals<br \/>\ntouched us, particulates<br \/>\ncombing the air and marking us<\/p>\n<p>invisibly changed. In the dust storm<br \/>\nthe desert stuck to me like silt, a line<br \/>\ndrawn around my mouth and nose.<br \/>\nHis back to me, his face<br \/>\npressed into the receiver<br \/>\nmy father said the guards had orders<br \/>\nto shoot to kill. What they held<\/p>\n<p>behind them was a question<br \/>\nof life and death:<br \/>\nthe rods delicately working<br \/>\nat the purist&#8217;s calculations and the tower<br \/>\ncasting itself clean across the river, ore<br \/>\nreduced to powder, a golden substance<br \/>\ndiffusible as breath.<\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<p>&#8220;Nuclear Reservation&#8221; originally appeared in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.toxipedia.org\/display\/hwt\/View+the+POTW+Book\">Particles on the Wall. \u00a0<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/toxipedia.org\/display\/toxipedia\/Nancy+Dickeman\">Nancy Dickeman<\/a> grew up in Richland and is a co-founder and co-curator of <a href=\"http:\/\/toxipedia.org\/display\/wanmec\/Particles+on+the+Wall\"><em>Particles on the Wall<\/em>,<\/a> a multidisciplinary exhibit exploring Hanford history and nuclear issues. Nancy\u2019s poems have appeared in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetrynw.org\/\">Poetry Northwest, <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/seaview\/\">The Seattle Review,<\/a> River City, <\/em>the anthology <a href=\"http:\/\/s_s_bentley.home.comcast.net\/~s_s_bentley\/fm\/hares.htm\"><em>March Hares: The Best of Fine Madness<\/em>,<\/a> and in other publications. Her essays appear in <em>The<\/em> <em>Seattle PI, Common Dreams<\/em> and <em>OCEAN Magazine<\/em>. She has recently completed her first novel manuscript, <em>Green Run, White Train<\/em>.
