{"id":569,"date":"2012-07-03T21:59:55","date_gmt":"2012-07-04T05:59:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=569"},"modified":"2012-07-03T21:59:55","modified_gmt":"2012-07-04T05:59:55","slug":"lindsey-walker","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=569","title":{"rendered":"Lindsey Walker"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My Kitchen Can Beat Up Your Kitchen<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My sweet tea is a song played on a saw.<br \/>\nMy sweet tea is the bluest yodel,<br \/>\nthe bone-chill fog raking fingers down the Unicois.<br \/>\nThe throats of those who\u2019ve ever tasted<br \/>\nhum with the wanting<br \/>\nof my sweet tea.<\/p>\n<p>The stovetop moans<br \/>\nunder grease splatter; red coils<br \/>\nsmoke spilled peanut brine.<br \/>\nLinoleum cracked, peeled, scuffed.<br \/>\nMy kitchen testifies<br \/>\nin odors of cornbread and orange pekoe.<\/p>\n<p>My catfish is crusted with the dry tears<br \/>\nof freshwater mermaids, their brown fins muddy,<br \/>\ntheir whiskers!<br \/>\nMy catfish is fried in fat rendered from cherubs,<br \/>\nthe batter crisps, the flesh yields.<br \/>\nAll tongues rejoice in glossolalia,<br \/>\nfor the salivating<br \/>\nsalvation of my catfish.<\/p>\n<p>My okra hops a train, rides the rail<br \/>\nall the way up to Chattanooga.<br \/>\nMy collard greens evangelize the feet<br \/>\nof adventurers before they enter my kitchen.<br \/>\nMy dumplings hotwire a Cadillac made of teeth;<br \/>\nthey hold the uvula for ransom.<\/p>\n<p>The stockpot boils over, yellow froth<br \/>\noff sweet potatoes. My kitchen<br \/>\nis haunted by ghosts<br \/>\nwielding flour sifters, whose recipes<br \/>\nin graphite curl with broth steam.<br \/>\nMy kitchen is a wishbone<br \/>\nI snap in half.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"lindseywalker.wordpress.com\">Lindsey Walker<\/a> is a poet and writer originally from Chattanooga. She has won the Loft Poetry Contest, the League for Innovation Award for essay, and the Whidbey Writers Workshop Students&#8217; Choice Award for fiction.
