Cordova Street<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a bleak whiteness<br \/>\non Cordova Street mixed<br \/>\nwith rain and battleship gray.<br \/>\nSmiles are sad, even laughter has an eerie clang.<br \/>\nWhispers prevail and a fog off Burrard Inlet<br \/>\nsettles in at four o\u2019clock as the Sisters\u2019 Sandwich Line wraps<br \/>\nitself halfway around the block to the back alley<br \/>\nwhere wine, urine, vanilla extract and after-shave commingle<br \/>\ninto sickly stench. Men and women in their twenties, thirties<br \/>\nforties and fifties have a sameness of pallor and age,<br \/>\nshare needles, jugs and sex.<\/p>\n<p>A half-crazed, rheumy-eyed woman<br \/>\nknocks on my parish door insisting I exorcise her.<br \/>\nI protest with words she can\u2019t comprehend<br \/>\nlike, \u201cneeding the archbishop\u2019s permission,\u201d and \u201cneeding the holiness I do not have.\u201d<br \/>\nNothing I say matters. In frustration I give her my blessing\u2026.<br \/>\nthe one I\u2019d bestow on a child, a rosary, a holy card.<br \/>\nShe thanks me. I watch her step out of my door,<br \/>\nwalk down the steps to the sidewalk<br \/>\nbelt across Cordova Street, not looking east or west,<br \/>\noblivious to swirling traffic. She makes it. I wonder how.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, Dick Brugger was named <a href=\"http:\/\/www.auburn-reporter.com\/news\/136699798.html\">City of\u00a0Auburn\u2019s First Poet Laureate. <\/a>He served as executive director of Auburn Youth Resources for\u00a0twenty-one years prior to his retirement in 1997. In 1983 he was\u00a0named Auburn Area Citizen of the Year. For another\u00a0twenty-one prior years, Brugger was a Franciscan Friar\u00a0and Roman Catholic priest. His poetry has appeared in\u00a0<em>PAWA Quarterly, Do Something &amp; Other Poems, <\/em>and\u00a0<em>PoetsWest Literary Journal.<\/em> His prose has appeared in\u00a0<em>Heart of the Matter.<\/em> \u00a0In 2009, the main\u00a0Auburn Youth Resources building was named The\u00a0Brugger Building.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;381 E.
