{"id":526,"date":"2012-06-17T09:57:50","date_gmt":"2012-06-17T17:57:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=526"},"modified":"2012-06-17T09:57:50","modified_gmt":"2012-06-17T17:57:50","slug":"laura-read","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=526","title":{"rendered":"Laura Read"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the Bible Tells Me So<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On the tape with his voice on it,<br \/>\nyour father is asking if you think<br \/>\nyour mother\u2019s legs are pretty.<\/p>\n<p>You were five, you didn\u2019t know<br \/>\nwhat makes a leg pretty,<br \/>\nhow it should curve out<\/p>\n<p>and then taper down to the ankle,<br \/>\nhow one should cross over the other,<br \/>\nthe skirt slide up.<\/p>\n<p>He laughs when you don\u2019t answer<br \/>\nthe way adults do.<\/p>\n<p>I can hear your breath on the tape,<br \/>\nI can see you in the living room<br \/>\nwith the gilt-framed faces of people<\/p>\n<p>named Ludrick and Vida,<br \/>\nthe turquoise chairs and the Zenith tv,<br \/>\nyour mother with her eyebrows<\/p>\n<p>drawn on and her dresses belted,<br \/>\nyour father with his microphone<br \/>\nand innuendo.<\/p>\n<p>You and your brother<br \/>\nwear robes over your cuffed pajamas,<br \/>\nyou have crewcuts and long, thin bones.<\/p>\n<p>This is the America<br \/>\nyou were born into, where lines<br \/>\nwere marker-thick<\/p>\n<p>between Cowboy and Indian,<br \/>\nyour mother and your father,<br \/>\neven you and your brother<\/p>\n<p>who sings loud into the tape<br \/>\nbut you they have to threaten<br \/>\nwith going to bed early<\/p>\n<p>if you won\u2019t do it<br \/>\nso your voice comes at us mad<br \/>\nacross the forty years\u2014<\/p>\n<p><em>Jesus loves me, this I know,<br \/>\nfor the Bible tells me so.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is your father, dead so long<br \/>\nyou don\u2019t remember his voice<br \/>\neven when you hear it.<\/p>\n<p>All those years, your mom dusted him<br \/>\nlike that empty vase<br \/>\nshe kept up on the mantle<\/p>\n<p>made of pink Depression glass.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For the Bible Tells Me So&#8221; previously appeared in <em>The Florida Review.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pankmagazine.com\/laura-read\/\">Laura Read<\/a> has published poems in a variety of journals, most recently in <em>Rattle, The Mississippi Review, <\/em>and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhreview.org\/\">The Bellingham Review.<\/a><\/em> Her chapbook, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/thebarking.com\/tag\/the-chewbacca-on-hollywood-boulevard-reminds-me-of-you\/\">The Chewbacca on Hollywood Boulevard Reminds Me of You, <\/a><\/em>was the 2010 winner of the<a href=\"http:\/\/floatingbridgepress.org\/\"> Floating Bridge Chapbook Award, <\/a>and her collection,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.upress.pitt.edu\/BookDetails.aspx?bookId=36337\"> <em>Instructions for My Mother\u2019s Funeral, <\/em><\/a>was the 2011 winner of the AWP Donald Hall Prize for Poetry and will be published this fall by the University of Pittsburgh Press.
