{"id":487,"date":"2012-06-02T22:28:18","date_gmt":"2012-06-03T06:28:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=487"},"modified":"2012-06-02T22:28:18","modified_gmt":"2012-06-03T06:28:18","slug":"anne-pitkin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=487","title":{"rendered":"Anne Pitkin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lapland Longspur<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Arctic Sparrow<br \/>\nit balances<br \/>\non a dwarf fireweed.<br \/>\nHills and sky roll<br \/>\noff the end of the visible world<\/p>\n<p>which tilts<br \/>\nthrough the implacable<br \/>\nharmonies<br \/>\nof space, unprotected,<br \/>\nits own laws exacting<br \/>\nand without prejudice.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, a furious<br \/>\nand delicate imbalance<br \/>\nthrives here:<\/p>\n<p>purple aster, harebell,<br \/>\nyellow oxytrope, the Longspur<br \/>\nwhose perch trembles<br \/>\nas it lets go and darts to the next.<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>Some proportions<br \/>\nhave no meaning: harebell<br \/>\nto Arctic winter, Longspur<br \/>\nto the urgency of summer<br \/>\non the tundra\u2019s millions of acres<br \/>\nwhere it nests,<br \/>\nits home lined<br \/>\nwith a puff of wool<br \/>\nfrom the musk ox.<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>Fewer and fewer stars set<br \/>\nas one travels<br \/>\nfarther north in winter.<br \/>\nThe Auroras swing across the sky,<br \/>\nsouls, some say,<br \/>\nof children<br \/>\nwho have died at birth.<br \/>\nAll night, they dance,<br \/>\nall the sunless weeks<br \/>\nthey dance in circles<br \/>\nwhipping streamers of light<br \/>\nacross the land encased<br \/>\nby an adamant darkness.<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>Tonight, the news<br \/>\nof a death was followed<br \/>\nby a Mozart concerto<br \/>\nfor flute and orchestra,<\/p>\n<p>was followed by the music<br \/>\nof Mozart as it has played<br \/>\nthrough two centuries of loss<\/p>\n<p>for which there is no recompense.<\/p>\n<p>The life of a bird<br \/>\nhurries from sparrow to sparrow.<\/p>\n<p>The Longspur builds<br \/>\nits minute bones with calcium<br \/>\nfrom the skeletons of lemmings.<\/p>\n<p>Occasionally, on the beach,<br \/>\nit nests in the skull of a walrus<\/p>\n<p>The life of a bird<br \/>\nsometimes hurries from a stutter<br \/>\nof wings to singing that flashes<br \/>\nacross an empty landscape.<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>Point Barrow:<br \/>\nNear midnight, July Fourth,<br \/>\ntwo boys walk out<br \/>\non the melting sea ice.<\/p>\n<p>From a distance,<br \/>\nagainst the white sea,<br \/>\nsmall and black under the sun,<br \/>\nthey seem to be dancing<br \/>\nround and round<\/p>\n<p>on the ice<br \/>\nat its most dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>A few say, when we speak<br \/>\nof the end<\/p>\n<p>of the Longspur, even<br \/>\nof Mozart, a very few say still<br \/>\nthe earth may heal itself.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Lapland Longspur&#8221; originally appeared in<em> Ironwood.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.annepitkin.com\/\">Anne Pitkin <\/a>grew up in Clarksville, TN, and earned her bachelor&#8217;s and master&#8217;s degrees from Vanderbilt University.
