{"id":403,"date":"2012-05-02T22:54:00","date_gmt":"2012-05-03T06:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=403"},"modified":"2013-08-19T09:21:21","modified_gmt":"2013-08-19T17:21:21","slug":"carol-light","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=403","title":{"rendered":"Carol Light"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>January Walk<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The wind has twisted the tops of hemlock and fir;<br \/>\ncones and needles spatter the muddy path.<br \/>\nRising from nearby chimneys: wood smoke and ash.<br \/>\nA cold mist washes my cheek and cattails stir<br \/>\nthe breeze, climbing dried and broken reeds<br \/>\nwhile birdsong mixes swift, twitter, chit,<br \/>\nand swallows hide among the rosehip thickets.<br \/>\nMy jacket snags on tangled arches, while beads<br \/>\nof dew fall from the vine. The year begins<br \/>\nanew. I thumb the cat-tongue underside<br \/>\nof a blackberry leaf, startled by its thorn.<br \/>\nOne snapped branch divides our trail. The winds<br \/>\nhave spun so little down. In 2011 she was nominated for a Pushcart Prize, named a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jackstraw.org\/programs\/writers\/WritersForum\/index.html\">Writing Fellow with Jack Straw Productions, <\/a>and received a GAP award for poetry from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artisttrust.org\/\">Artist Trust.<\/a> She studied poetry in the <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/engl\/cw\/mfa.php\">MFA program at the University of Washington<\/a> where she was awarded the Academy of American Poets prize.
