McElroy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Breaking Wild Horses<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When romance walked in<br \/>\nthere were too many fatal secrets<br \/>\nhiding in sheltered places.<br \/>\nWe tried reining them in<br \/>\ncorralling their savage cries<br \/>\nfor attention \u2013 nothing seemed<br \/>\nto hold them at bay especially<br \/>\nas night broke the skyline<br \/>\nwith the first signs of morning<br \/>\nand our guards were down &#8212;<br \/>\nour fences rattling with weakness<br \/>\nthe whinny and stomping<br \/>\nof half remembered injuries<br \/>\nand families scabbed over.<br \/>\nWe fussed with the images<br \/>\ntrying to tidy them into civil<br \/>\nobedience \u2013 read how others<br \/>\nhad calmed their unruliness<br \/>\nas they nuzzled soft places<br \/>\nleft trails of rancid breath<br \/>\nflicked debris into the room (onto the table).<br \/>\nWhen romance moved on<br \/>\nthe old nags came closer to the house<br \/>\nchewed on the lace curtains.<br \/>\nWe couldn\u2019t just put them down<br \/>\nnot after they had been around<br \/>\nso long and carried so much baggage.<br \/>\nSo we groomed them<br \/>\ntrotted them out for prizes<br \/>\nboasted about their origins &#8212;<br \/>\nhow difficult it had been to finally<br \/>\nkeep them away from our comings<br \/>\nand goings \u2013 herded them into a far field<br \/>\nwhere their passing might go unnoticed<br \/>\nwhere even weeds bloomed in colors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By permission of the author.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>\u00a9<\/strong>\u00a0Copyright 2012.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/engl\/newsletter\/2011-2\/mcelroy.php\">Colleen J. McElroy\u2019s collection of poems include most recently, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sleeping-Moon-Illinois-Poetry-Series\/dp\/0252074769\">Sleeping with the Moon <\/a><\/em>(2007), for which she received a 2008 PEN\/Oakland National Literary Award. Her latest collections of creative non-fiction include: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/A-Long-Way-St-Louie\/dp\/1566890594\/ref=lp_B001HMRQ3E_1_4?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1335028901&amp;sr=1-4\">A Long Way From St. Louie <\/a><\/em>(travel memoirs), and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Over-Lip-World-Storytellers-Madagascar\/dp\/0295981156\/ref=lp_B001HMRQ3E_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1335028901&amp;sr=1-2\">Over the Lip of the World: Among the Storytellers of Madagascar\u00a0<\/a><\/em>(finalist in the 2000 PEN USA Research-based Creative Nonfiction category). Winner of the Before Columbus American Book Award, she also has received two Fulbright Fellowships, two NEA Fellowships, a DuPont Fellowship, and a Rockefeller Fellowship. Her work has been translated into Russian, Italian, Arabic, Greek, French, German, Malay, and Serbo-Croatian.
