{"id":2288,"date":"2013-12-18T23:48:10","date_gmt":"2013-12-19T07:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=2288"},"modified":"2013-12-18T23:48:25","modified_gmt":"2013-12-19T07:48:25","slug":"emily-warn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=2288","title":{"rendered":"Emily Warn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Talking with the Gigantic Maple About the Dragonfly<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Neither you<br \/>\nnor I<br \/>\ncan mimic<br \/>\na dragonfly<br \/>\nthough your seed-wings<br \/>\nclack<br \/>\nlike their wings<br \/>\nwhen they take off<br \/>\nin unison<br \/>\nto practice backflips<br \/>\nabove the lake.<\/p>\n<p>Nor can we balance<br \/>\non a single blade<br \/>\nof shore grass,<br \/>\nadmiring ourselves<br \/>\nto shame the lake<br \/>\ninto polishing its mirror.<\/p>\n<p>But we can be still<br \/>\nand hear the quiet<br \/>\nbetween<br \/>\ntwo echoing thrush.<\/p>\n<p>And in the hush<br \/>\nof our leaves<br \/>\nand breaths<br \/>\nconjoined,<br \/>\nwe can see<br \/>\nuniverses<br \/>\nin the dragonfly\u2019s<br \/>\neight eyes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(from \u201cFlowering Branches\u201d in <em>The Novice Insomniac<\/em> (Copper Canyon 1996))<br \/>\n\u201cI stood where you would not see me<br \/>\nAnd my armload of flowers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/bio\/emily-warn\">Emily Warn,<\/a> poetry links music and meaning every bit as powerfully and oddly as religious traditions do, inventing complicated, invisible relations. She moved to the Pacific Northwest 1978 to work for North Cascades National Park, and a year later moved to Seattle where she has lived, more or less ever since. Sherecently served as the Webby Award\u2013winning founding editor of poetryfoundation.org, and now divides her time between Seattle and Twisp, Washington. Warn has published five collections of poetry, including three books:<a title=\"The Leaf Path\" href=\"http:\/\/emilywarn.com\/Leaf.html\" target=\"_parent\"><em>\u00a0The Leaf Path\u00a0<\/em><\/a>(1982),<a href=\"http:\/\/emilywarn.com\/Novice.html\" target=\"_parent\"><em>The Novice Insomniac\u00a0<\/em><\/a>(1996) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Shadow-Architect-Emily-Warn\/dp\/1556592779\"><em>Shadow Architect<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(2008), all from Copper Canyon Press, and two chapbooks\u00a0<em>The <a href=\"http:\/\/emilywarn.com\/books\/the-book-of-esther\/\">Book of Esther<\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/emilywarn.com\/books\/the-book-of-esther\/\">\u00a0<\/a>(1986) and\u00a0<em>Highway Suite\u00a0<\/em>(1987). Her essays and poems appear widely, including in\u00a0<em>Poetry<\/em>,\u00a0<em>BookForum<\/em>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackbird.vcu.edu\/v4n2\/poetry\/warn_e\/\"><em>Blackbird<\/em>,<\/a>\u00a0<em>Parabola<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Seattle Times<\/em>, The <a href=\"http:\/\/writersalmanac.publicradio.org\/index.php?date=2000\/11\/14\">Writers\u2019 Almanac.<\/a> She has taught creative writing or served as writer-in-residence at many schools and arts centers.
