{"id":2233,"date":"2013-11-27T22:00:35","date_gmt":"2013-11-28T06:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=2233"},"modified":"2013-12-02T17:43:58","modified_gmt":"2013-12-03T01:43:58","slug":"ann-batchelor-hursey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=2233","title":{"rendered":"Ann Batchelor Hursey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Made by Hand<\/p>\n<p>My thumb loops yarn, inserts<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>the needle\u2019s tip,<br \/>\npulls yarn through each stitch: right<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>to left, back<br \/>\nto front\u2014worked-in, slipped-off<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>my needle\u2014<br \/>\nI purse my lips and knit<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>this prayer shawl<br \/>\nto warm a friend\u2019s shoulders.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>My son appears<br \/>\nto say, <em>Knitting makes you<\/em><br \/>\n<em> <span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>look older.<\/em><br \/>\nStartled, I think: Is this<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>the first time<br \/>\nhe\u2019s seen gray on my temples?<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>Is it the way<br \/>\nI squint beneath the lamp?<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>My needles slide,<br \/>\nknit three, purl three\u2014and then<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>reverse the row<br \/>\nbelow; a three-beat seed<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>stitch, trinity<br \/>\nof healing thoughts. As fingers<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>move I tell<br \/>\nhim how <em>I cast sixty stitches,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> <span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>like my age\u2014<\/em><br \/>\nMy needles slide, knit three, purl<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>three\u2014three beat<br \/>\ntrinity of healing thoughts\u2014<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>Me, thinking when<br \/>\nwas the first time I thought<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>my parents <em>old?<\/em><br \/>\nUnobserved, I used to watch them<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>sitting, side by side\u2014<br \/>\ntheir eyes on strangers\u2014 and me<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>wondering when<br \/>\ndid they put on weight, when<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>did their shoulders<br \/>\nsoften? My son speaks again,<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>would I listen<br \/>\nto a Haydn solo, the piece he<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>needs to learn<br \/>\nnext week? He leans against<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>my knees, catches<br \/>\nthe shawl, now falling off<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>my lap. My<br \/>\nhands graze past his unkempt hair<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>as we listen to<br \/>\nthis floating melody, this<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>slow concerto.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s then I start my final row,<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>turn all that<br \/>\nlength now gathered on the floor\u2014<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span>consider skills<br \/>\nof binding-off.
