{"id":1906,"date":"2013-08-28T07:33:11","date_gmt":"2013-08-28T15:33:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=1906"},"modified":"2013-08-28T07:33:11","modified_gmt":"2013-08-28T15:33:11","slug":"amethyst-dauphin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=1906","title":{"rendered":"Amethyst Dauphin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Becoming<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My identity is the abandoned house<br \/>\nneighbors point<br \/>\nto tell frightening stories about.<br \/>\nI know which ones they believe.<br \/>\nMy identity is a black joke on Father\u2019s Day<br \/>\na ghetto butterfly in the suburbs<br \/>\na porn studio<br \/>\nis not a window<br \/>\nI stopped looking at<br \/>\nothers in order to understand<br \/>\nmyself.<br \/>\nI am a bearded woman<br \/>\na mid life crisis<br \/>\na body bag<br \/>\na place to dispose all of my dead weight.<br \/>\nI am an unkept bedroom.<br \/>\nI know where everything is.<br \/>\nI am trying to be as fluid as word<br \/>\nplay.<br \/>\nI want my character to be<br \/>\nrearranged and made better.<br \/>\nI am a poet.<br \/>\nI write to make love to my existence.<br \/>\nI am an old folks home.<br \/>\nThere are war stories in my make up.<br \/>\nSometimes I grow tired of fighting.<br \/>\nI am an antediluvian breath who<br \/>\ncan hardly hold themself in.<br \/>\nI spend so much time thinking about<br \/>\nmy construct<br \/>\nI forget to thank ancestors who<br \/>\ndrink heartache like wine.<br \/>\nI am twenty,<br \/>\nand I am trying to understand my place in<br \/>\nthis world so I document the person<br \/>\nmy sadness makes me.<br \/>\nWhen I believed I did not have a right<br \/>\nto exist,<br \/>\nI stopped writing about what I<br \/>\ncouldn\u2019t change.<br \/>\nI wasn\u2019t the person I wanted to be<br \/>\nso I evolved<br \/>\nbecame someone who wasn\u2019t as<br \/>\nnear as then.<br \/>\nI am unlearning all of the selves<br \/>\nwho have been created for me.<br \/>\nI am trying to be my own god.<br \/>\nI don\u2019t want someone else to take credit for saving me.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A self-described &#8220;gender fluid person,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/kuow.org\/post\/phin-dauphins-baritone-without-body\">Amethyst Dauphin<\/a> was part of a slam poetry team preparing to represent Seattle at <a href=\"http:\/\/youthspeaks.org\/bravenewvoices\/\">Brave New Voices,<\/a> an international poetry festival. Dauphin aims to document the path taken to understand their gender, and reflects a deep regard for language rooted in the experience of growing up in a household where English, Spanish, French and Creole were spoken on a daily basis.
