We\u2019ve read<br \/>\nthe stories of humans furred,<br \/>\nflesh erupting to wings, or scales,<br \/>\ngill-gasp of transformation.<\/p>\n<p>I tell them some are stories of pursuit,<br \/>\na dove answered with a hawk,<br \/>\na hare with greyhound as reply.<br \/>\nPursuer and pursued, their deft dance<br \/>\nthat ended once with a grain of corn,<br \/>\nswallowed by a hen who birthed<br \/>\nthe storyteller, Taliesin.<\/p>\n<p>But what the students want to know is pain.<br \/>\nThat remembered moment when<br \/>\nquills pierce skin, fingernails bleed<br \/>\nto claws. Beyond the window<br \/>\nwinter\u2019s first kiss startles the grass with frost.<\/p>\n<p>I tell them yes,<br \/>\nthere is always pain at birth or when<br \/>\nour tent of flesh opens<br \/>\nlike a door to the sky,<br \/>\nand something more, you must<br \/>\nlean close to hear<br \/>\nthe single note of joy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.maureenmcquerry.com\/news\/\">Maureen McQuerry<\/a> is a Young Adult novelist, poet and teacher. <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.maureenmcquerry.com\/news\/the-peculiars\/\">The Peculiars,<\/a><\/em> her YA Steampunk novel, debuts in May with Abrams\/Amulet followed by <em>Beyond the Door<\/em> and <em>Time Out of Time. <\/em>She is also the author of two non-fiction books: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Nuclear-Legacy-Students-Atomic-Cities\/dp\/157477087X\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1331694172&amp;sr=8-2\">Nuclear Legacy<\/a>\u00a0and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Student-Inquiry-Conducting-Investigations-Classroom\/dp\/0936386967\/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1331694172&amp;sr=8-7\">Student Inquiry.<\/a><\/em> <\/em>Her poetry has been published in many literary journals including <em>Smartish Pace, Quidditty<\/em> and <em>The Southern Review.<\/em> Her chapbook<em> <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Relentless-Light-MAUREEN-MCQUERRY\/dp\/1599241234\/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1331694172&amp;sr=8-6\">Relentless Light<\/a><\/em> <\/em>was the winner of the New Eden Chapbook award.
