Hummingbird<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
She remembers how he entered the flower,
\nkeen on the honeysuckle
\nthat fluttered itself,
\nenamored of red\u2014
\nhis brazen body, hovering,
\ndarting in and out,
\ninterrupted, now and then,
\nby the humming
\nof a nectar-seeking rival,
\nequally as beautiful.
\nThen with the flush of spring
\nhe turns a coppery back to her
\nascends, slowly, to great heights
\nand dives on whistling wings
\nin a giddy twist toward her, tail on fire.
\nShe\u2019d like to get used to this.
\nBut such displays are short-lived.
\nGiven to being alone,
\nnever alighting\u2014or not for long,
\never a flitterer, he buzzes off
\nto the next flower
\nas she knew he would,
\nleaving her the nest
\nand a hunger
\ngreater than her tiny body lets on.<\/p>\n
