{"id":1833,"date":"2013-08-04T06:34:20","date_gmt":"2013-08-04T14:34:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=1833"},"modified":"2013-08-04T06:34:20","modified_gmt":"2013-08-04T14:34:20","slug":"alicia-hokanson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=1833","title":{"rendered":"Alicia Hokanson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Teaching Homer to Eighth Graders<\/p>\n<p>What appeals to them most is that Odysseus<br \/>\nwas one horny guy<br \/>\nmoving from goddess to nymph;<br \/>\nnot that he kept his vision<br \/>\nof Ithaca like a flame in his gut.<\/p>\n<p>And Telemachus \u2013 that wimp \u2013<br \/>\nturned out to be okay,<br \/>\nhe could have strung the bow<br \/>\nif his dad had let him.<\/p>\n<p>Argos, on the dungheap, rolls<br \/>\nhis eyes and dies,<br \/>\njoy in his doggy heart<br \/>\nwhen he hears his master&#8217;s voice.<\/p>\n<p>And Eurylochus-\u2013a fool to eat those cattle\u2013<br \/>\ngot what he deserved.<\/p>\n<p>Nausicaa? An idiot<br \/>\nto let a naked man<br \/>\nfrom the bushes by the river<br \/>\nnearly hug her about the knees.<\/p>\n<p>With what glee they read<br \/>\nthe bloody battle in the hall.<br \/>\nHow cool that Antinous<br \/>\ngot it in the throat<br \/>\nand that Melanthius<br \/>\nwas strung up on a brutal wall.<\/p>\n<p>How far we&#8217;ve come when they begin<br \/>\nto feel the complications of return<br \/>\nto greening Ithaca, and kneel in the orchard<br \/>\nwith Laertes weeping.
