They make it known<br \/>\nto the mind of the bartender, <em>This day is our birthday.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>No. Three baleen whales, a gray, a blue, &amp; a humpback,<br \/>\nswim into a bar. They sing in high-pitched vocalizations &amp; clicks,<br \/>\n<em>This day is our birthday.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>No. Three rocks, an igneous, a metamorphic, &amp; a sedimentary,<br \/>\nroll into a bar. In Morse code they knock against themselves<br \/>\nto the bartender, <em>Today is our birthday.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>No. Three weeds, a sheep sorrel, a redstem filaree, &amp; a Canada<br \/>\ngoldenrod, seed themselves at a bar. Utilizing the slight air<br \/>\ncurrents available they rustle to the bartender, <em>Today\u2019s. . .<\/em><\/p>\n<p>No. Three trees, a Jenny sycamore, a paw paw, &amp; a blossoming pear. . .<\/p>\n<p>An anaconda, a coachwhip, &amp; a Texas blind snake. . .<\/p>\n<p>OK, a swift, a chicken hawk, &amp; a blue jay. . .<\/p>\n<p>OK, OK. Three subnuclear particles appear &amp; do not appear<br \/>\nsimultaneously in various unknowable interstices of realities themselves<br \/>\nbarely conceivable at the bar &amp; outside the bar. They harmonize<\/p>\n<p>in vibrations at once audible &amp; inaudible to the bartender<br \/>\nin such a way to at last, at long last, prove senseless the dichotomy<br \/>\nof the observer &amp; the observed, <em>Today\u2019s our birthday!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>No matter,<\/em> says the bartender. <em>We, all of us,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> gallop terribly against each other\u2019s bodies.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cINCLUSIVE OF HELLO AND GOODBYE\u201d originally appeared in <em>POOL, A Journal of<br \/>\nPoetry.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jackstraw.org\/programs\/writers\/WritersForum\/06\/writers\/larry.shtml\">Larry Laurence<\/a> lives in Seattle and works as a rehabilitation\u00a0counselor.
