Tie orange sleeve to orange sleeve<br \/>\nbefore laying my head down.<br \/>\nMy brother covered my body with leaves and needles,<br \/>\nso I could be nothing worth notice<br \/>\nand warm. Food was hard to find<br \/>\nbefore we discovered roots for winter,<br \/>\nrosehips for spring. In the summer and fall<br \/>\nbounty overwhelmed us. The longings we once held<br \/>\nfor mattresses, refrigerators, lamps,<br \/>\nreplaced by lakes and loons before the sun rose.<br \/>\nKnitting scraps of wool into sweaters.<br \/>\nPraying every day, earnest words<br \/>\nto the God we could all now feel coming.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The First Night&#8221; is reprinted from\u00a0<em>Labletter.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.caitlinthomson.com\/# \">Caitlin Elizabeth Thomson<\/a> is a Canadian who married an American.
