She remembers<br \/>\nnothing since the firemen and<br \/>\nthe ambulance; a month lost<br \/>\nso far, though her speech and<br \/>\nvision are mercifully unaffected<br \/>\nby her peculiar, sequestered,<br \/>\narguably lucky, anatomically,<br \/>\nbleed. At the mirror, she looks<br \/>\nat me standing behind her,<br \/>\nmy right hand wrapped in her<br \/>\nbelt. I say Bend your left knee,<br \/>\nMrs. Davis, and she says, left<br \/>\neyelid drooping, left side of her<br \/>\nmouth skewing down, You<br \/>\nwouldn\u2019t know it now, but I<br \/>\nwas beautiful once. Men came<br \/>\nfrom Fort Lewis Sundays when<br \/>\nI was 17 to watch me swan out<br \/>\nof First Baptist. She laughs and<br \/>\nI laugh, then she tears up, and I<br \/>\nsay Can you bend your left knee,<br \/>\nMrs. Beautiful? and she says<br \/>\nYou about useless, boy. And<br \/>\nI say Yes, ma\u2019am. True truth.<br \/>\nBut happiness is fitful, don\u2019t you<br \/>\nfind? A flitting wren in a lilac<br \/>\nglides down, lights on your knee.<br \/>\nThe left. This. Can you bend it?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.versedaily.org\/2008\/abouttimothykellyte.shtml\">Timothy Kelly<\/a> holds Master&#8217;s Degrees in Physical Therapy from the University of Washington, and in Fine Arts\/Creative Writing from Boston University. Since 1982, he&#8217;s worked in Olympia, WA as a Physical Therapist.
