Trees of my Childhood<\/p>\n
Returning to home of my youth
\nI walk the yard \u2013
\nLingering among the trees
\nI climbed and knew as a child.<\/p>\n
They gave me pause
\nand entreated me to
\nembrace them.
\nShoulders swooning
\nand heart willing
\nI nearly did \u2013<\/p>\n
I longed to engage them
\nin conversation,
\nlike the days when they were
\nthe greatest actors
\nin my most masterful plays;
\nWe performed daily while I lay
\nin their arms and played at their feet.<\/p>\n
But I stopped short
\nunder the gaze
\nthat I assumed was
\njudging from the window.<\/p>\n
I was ashamed then,
\nand again, more fervently,
\nlater.<\/p>\n
