{"id":1716,"date":"2013-07-03T10:49:35","date_gmt":"2013-07-03T18:49:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=1716"},"modified":"2013-07-03T10:49:35","modified_gmt":"2013-07-03T18:49:35","slug":"mark-halperin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=1716","title":{"rendered":"Mark Halperin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ON THE STEPS OF TEMPLE SHALOM<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Inside the old, gray stone house,<br \/>\nits eaves trimmed in the flat-board,<br \/>\nMidwest style of the neighborhood,<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span> the children are learning Hebrew<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span> and history and to be Jewish<br \/>\nas best they can where Jews are few.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe they are learning to be rare<br \/>\nwhile old snow melts from the roof<br \/>\nand the sun, absent recently, proves<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span> it can shine in the blue<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span> and white sky. These are colors<br \/>\nthe children would be sure to notice, who<\/p>\n<p>are learning the flag of Israel<br \/>\nand their ties to all that history.<br \/>\nRecognize them? They\u2019d rather be<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span> screaming and chasing each other<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span> under them like other children.<br \/>\nAnd they will soon, but must wait. More<\/p>\n<p>than one of my uncles would have said<br \/>\nJews can\u2019t live in Yakima or<br \/>\nthe town we drove from. One would be sure<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span> we\u2019d never be American<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span> enough, another terrified<br \/>\nwe just might, all of them come<\/p>\n<p>too far not to understand<br \/>\nonly the shadow of the past<br \/>\ngrows, but thinner, more odorless.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span> The children sit in a room<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span> waiting for their parents<br \/>\nto rescue them from Temple Shalom.<\/p>\n<p>They are further away all the time,<br \/>\nas Temple Shalom is, under its blue<br \/>\nand white skullcap.
