{"id":170,"date":"2012-03-08T22:29:44","date_gmt":"2012-03-09T06:29:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=170"},"modified":"2012-03-08T22:33:03","modified_gmt":"2012-03-09T06:33:03","slug":"georgia-stewart-mcdade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=170","title":{"rendered":"Georgia Stewart McDade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Way Some of Us Are<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Carver\u2019s knife found shut, said The Times.<br \/>\nNo exclamation necessary.<br \/>\nA period is all there is.<br \/>\nNo one knows how not surprised<br \/>\nmany folks are.<br \/>\nA human being shot, killed another human<br \/>\nbeing.<br \/>\nThat\u2019s the truth, the fact.<br \/>\nThat one human being is white and the other a<br \/>\nNative American is a fact and often a<br \/>\nproblem.<br \/>\nThe former is a policeman; the latter a carver.<br \/>\nToo often that is a problem.<br \/>\nI submit that if both had looked at each other as<br \/>\nhuman beings there would\u2019ve been no<br \/>\nkilling.<br \/>\nI submit that the white policeman saw red long<br \/>\nbefore he saw human being.<br \/>\nI submit that many policemen often see a color<br \/>\nbefore they see a person.<br \/>\nI submit much of the policeman\u2019s culture says<br \/>\nbeware of people of color, the darker they,<br \/>\nthe more careful you.<br \/>\nI submit the policeman believed he was in<br \/>\ndanger though he with his gun was<br \/>\nnot close enough to see a closed knife.<\/p>\n<p>And I submit, diminished mental state<br \/>\nnotwithstanding, Mr. Williams knew much<br \/>\nof this and chose to risk being himself.<\/p>\n<p>No doubt there is sorrow; there should be.<br \/>\nBut absolutely no amount of sorrow nor<br \/>\nanything else, nothing will bring back Mr.<br \/>\nJohn T. Williams.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, policemen do not want to be killed.<br \/>\nOf course, they must protect themselves.<br \/>\nBut as long as they serve a populace they fear,<br \/>\nwe can count on too many of them<br \/>\nstomping, beating, and shooting, killing<br \/>\ntoo\u2014acting and then asking questions.<br \/>\nThe cold-blooded killings of their comrades<br \/>\ndoubtlessly makes them more guarded.<br \/>\nUntil policemen know more of the folks they are<br \/>\nguarding we can expect them to feel justified<br \/>\nin their actions despite being deadly wrong.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Georgia Stewart McDade, a Louisiana native who\u2019s lived in Seattle more than half her life, loves reading and writing. Most of her career was spent teaching. <a href=\"http:\/\/aawa-seattle.com\/\">The African-American Writers\u2019 Alliance<\/a> member has been reading her stories and poetry in public since 1991.
