SWEET DARKNESS<\/p>\n
When your eyes are tired
\nthe world is tired also.<\/p>\n
When your vision has gone,
\nno part of the world can find you.<\/p>\n
Time to go into the dark
\nwhere the night has eyes
\nto recognize your own.<\/p>\n
There you can be sure
\nyou are not beyond love.<\/p>\n
The dark will be your home
\ntonight.<\/p>\n
The night will give you a horizon
\nfurther than you can see.<\/p>\n
You must learn one thing.
\nThe world was made to be free in.<\/p>\n
Give up all the other worlds
\nexcept the one to which you belong.<\/p>\n
Sometimes it takes darkness and the sweet
\nconfinement of your aloneness
\nto learn<\/p>\n
anything or anyone
\nthat does not bring you alive<\/p>\n
is too small for you.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n David Whyte<\/a>\u00a0is a poet, author, and lecturer who makes his home in Washington. \u00a0He is the author of seven books of poetry and three books of prose, holds a degree in Marine Zoology, and has traveled extensively, including living and working as a naturalist guide in the Galapagos Islands and leading anthropological and natural history expeditions in the Andes, the Amazon, and the Himalaya. He brings this wealth of experience to his poetry, lectures and workshops. An Associate Fellow at Templeton College and Said Business School at the University of Oxford, he is one of the few poets to take his perspectives on creativity into the field of organizational development, where he works with many European, American and international companies.
