{"id":1593,"date":"2013-04-16T21:17:57","date_gmt":"2013-04-17T05:17:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=1593"},"modified":"2013-04-16T21:17:57","modified_gmt":"2013-04-17T05:17:57","slug":"kathryn-hunt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=1593","title":{"rendered":"Kathryn Hunt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE NEWBORNS<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All through the night,<br \/>\nall through the long witless hallways of my sleep,<br \/>\nfrom my hospital bed<br \/>\nI heard the newborn babies cry,<br \/>\nbewildered like new arrivals anywhere,<br \/>\nbetween worlds, unacquainted with<br \/>\nthe names of things.<\/p>\n<p>That afternoon a kind nurse named Laura<br \/>\nhad taken me for a stroll to exercise<br \/>\nthe red line of my wound . . . .<br \/>\nWe stopped by the nursery window<br \/>\nand a flannel-swathed boy<br \/>\nin a clear plastic cradle was pushed to the glass.<br \/>\nWe peered at him and said, \u201cWelcome.<br \/>\nYou\u2019ve come to Earth.\u201d<br \/>\nWe laughed and shook our heads.<\/p>\n<p>All through the night,<br \/>\nall through the drug-spangled rapture of my dreams,<br \/>\nI heard the newborn babies sing,<br \/>\nfirst one, then another. That bright hiss,<br \/>\nthose soft octaves of wonder,<br \/>\nthe fierce beginning of their lament.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Newborns&#8221; is reprinted from<em> The Journal of the American Medical Association.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kathrynhunt.net\/\">Kathryn Hunt<\/a> is a writer and filmmaker. She recently completed a memoir, <em>The Province of Leaves,<\/em> the story of a mother and a daughter and the tangled, maddening, and abiding claims of family.
