The Fantasy

 <\/p>\n

Walking the halls with my daughter,
\nher IV pole like Asclepius\u2019 staff, snake
\ntwined, she rolls past<\/p>\n

curtained cubicles, other children
\nwith cancer, Crohn\u2019s, cauldrons
\nof misinformed codes, cellular traffic jams,<\/p>\n

bodies rising against
\nthemselves. Hydra monsters
\nslither out their noses, spiral from chests,<\/p>\n

wrapping arms like bindweed.<\/p>\n

While medicine drips\u2014a cup
\nof Gorgon\u2019s blood might heal\u2014injecting
\nsunny day regularity like morning coffee\u2014<\/p>\n

we mothers clutch Medusa\u2019s mask,
\nstroke stubble-crowned heads, calm
\nbuzzing needles of fear.<\/p>\n

We call upon our powers of invention
\nimagining we are the ones
\nwho escape unharmed and<\/p>\n

ward off time in cartoon
\nfantasies, where Roadrunner
\nis never road-kill.<\/p>\n
