{"id":148,"date":"2012-03-02T22:43:07","date_gmt":"2012-03-03T06:43:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=148"},"modified":"2012-03-04T20:46:00","modified_gmt":"2012-03-05T04:46:00","slug":"holly-hughes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=148","title":{"rendered":"Holly Hughes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Bath<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The tub fills inch by inch,<br \/>\nas I kneel beside it, trail my fingers<br \/>\nin the bright braid of water.<br \/>\nMom perches on the toilet seat,<br \/>\nentranced by the ritual until<br \/>\nshe realizes the bath&#8217;s for her.<br \/>\nOh no, she says, drawing her<br \/>\nthree layers of shirts to her chest,<br \/>\ncrossing her arms and legs.<br \/>\nOh no, I couldn\u2019t, she repeats,<br \/>\nbrow furrowing, that look I now<br \/>\nrecognize like an approaching squall.<br \/>\nI abandon reason, the hygiene argument,<br \/>\npromise a Hershey&#8217;s bar, if she will just,<br \/>\nplease, take off her clothes. Oh no,<br \/>\nshe repeats, her voice rising.<br \/>\nMeanwhile, the water is cooling.<br \/>\nI strip off my clothes, step into it,<br \/>\nlet the warm water take me<br \/>\ncompletely, slipping down until<br \/>\nonly my face shines up, a moon mask.<br \/>\nMom stays with me, interested now<br \/>\nin this turn of events. I sit up.<br \/>\nWill you wash my back, Mom?<br \/>\nSo much gone, but let this<br \/>\nstill be there. She bends over<br \/>\nto dip the washcloth in the still<br \/>\nwarm water, squeezes it,<br \/>\nlets it dribble down my back,<br \/>\nleans over to rub the butter pat<br \/>\nof soap, swiping each armpit,<br \/>\nthen rinses off the suds with long<br \/>\npracticed strokes. I turn around<br \/>\nto thank her, catch her smiling,<br \/>\nlips pursed, humming,<br \/>\nstill a mother with a daughter<br \/>\nwhose back needs washing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Holly J.
