Slatted cupboards,<\/p>\n<p>mouse holes, knots in trees, vineyard arches<br \/>\nnow pull in light like a poem.<\/p>\n<p>But no\u2013\u2013it&#8217;s just fantasy\u2013\u2013shadows<br \/>\nsecure a propensity to multiply, whether<\/p>\n<p>I wrap them up or not.<\/p>\n<p><em>One must have a mind heavy in thought<br \/>\nto keep shadows like eggs in an apron.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Shadows wet the ground they walk on;<br \/>\nanguish makes an apron damp.<\/p>\n<p>But for me, I find true,<br \/>\nwhen I shoo dark shapes into my folds<\/p>\n<p>like children beneath an attic&#8217;s eves<br \/>\nI become a nest for the resting shadows.<\/p>\n<p>They crack; they birth in me; they fly away.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/splab.org\/living-room\/jeanine-walker-bio\/\">Jeanine Walker<\/a> holds a Ph.D. in Creative Writing &amp; Literature from the University of Houston. She has been the recipient of a Donald Barthelme Memorial Fellowship and an Inprint Brown Fellowship. Her writing has appeared or is forthcoming in <em>Cimarron Review, Cream City Review, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gulfcoastmag.org\/index.php?n=3&amp;si=3&amp;s=363\">Gulf Coast<\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gulfcoastmag.org\/index.php?n=3&amp;si=3&amp;s=363\">,<\/a> <em>Narrative,<\/em> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.conjunctions.com\/webcon\/walker08.htm\"><em>Web Conjunctions. <\/em><\/a>She has worked as the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lectures.org\/wits\/writers_n_schools.php\"> Writers in the Schools Program Manager at Seattle Arts &amp; Lectures<\/a> since 2009, has been a member of the Seattle performance poetry groups <a href=\"http:\/\/thefourhoarsemen.blogspot.com\/2012\/04\/four-horsemen-sound-poem-score.html\">The Four Horsemen<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/myrmachine.wordpress.com\/2012\/12\/07\/root-lick-re-drum-construction-w-alex-bleecker-jeremy-springsteed\/\">Re Drum Machine,<\/a> and she writes, sings, and plays trumpet for the country music duo The Drop Shadows.
