{"id":1205,"date":"2012-12-08T11:45:19","date_gmt":"2012-12-08T19:45:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=1205"},"modified":"2012-12-08T11:46:17","modified_gmt":"2012-12-08T19:46:17","slug":"jess-walter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/kathleenflenniken.com\/blog\/?p=1205","title":{"rendered":"Jess Walter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Brief Political Manifesto<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I was driving around the packed Costco parking lot<br \/>\nlooking for a space and listening to some guy<br \/>\non NPR talk about America\u2019s growing suburban poor<br \/>\nwhen I saw this woman with four kids\u2014<br \/>\nlittle stepladders, two-four-six-eight\u2014<br \/>\nwaiting to climb in the car while Mom<br \/>\nloaded a cask of peanut better and<br \/>\npallets of swimsuits into the back<br \/>\nof this all-wheel drive vehicle<br \/>\nand the kids were so cute I waved<br \/>\nand that\u2019s when I saw the most amazing thing<br \/>\nas the woman bent over<br \/>\nto pick up a barrel<br \/>\nof grape juice:<br \/>\nher low-rise pants rose low and right there<br \/>\nin the small of her large back<br \/>\nstretched a single strained string,<br \/>\na thin strap of fabric, yes,<br \/>\nthe Devil\u2019s floss, I shit you not<br \/>\na thong, I swear to God, a thong,<br \/>\nnow me, I\u2019m okay with the thong<br \/>\npolitically and aesthetically, I\u2019m fine<br \/>\nwith it being up there or out there,<br \/>\nor wherever it happens to be.<\/p>\n<p>My only question is:<br \/>\nwhen did Moms start wearing them?<\/p>\n<p>I remember my mom\u2019s underwear<br \/>\n(Laundry was one of our chores:<br \/>\nwe folded those things awkwardly,<br \/>\nlike fitted sheets. We snapped them<br \/>\nlike tablecloths. Thwap.<br \/>\nMy sister stood on one end,<br \/>\nme on the other<br \/>\nand we walked toward each other<br \/>\ntwice.<\/p>\n<p>We folded those things<br \/>\nlike big American flags,<br \/>\nhats off, respectful<br \/>\ncareful not to let them<br \/>\nbrush the ground.)<\/p>\n<p>Now I know there are people out there<br \/>\nwho constantly fret about<br \/>\nthe Fabric of America;<br \/>\ngay couples getting married, violent videos, nasty TV,<br \/>\nthat sort of thing.<br \/>\nBut it seems to me<br \/>\nthe Fabric of America<br \/>\nwould be just fine<br \/>\nif there was a little more of it<br \/>\nin our mothers\u2019 underpants.<\/p>\n<p>And that is the issue I will run on<br \/>\nwhen I eventually run:<br \/>\nGetting our moms out of thongs<br \/>\nand back into hammocks<br \/>\nwith leg holes<br \/>\nthe way God<br \/>\nintended.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A Brief Political Manifesto&#8221; originally appeared in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Financial-Lives-Poets-Novel-P-S\/dp\/0061916056\/ref=la_B000APTHRC_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1354995505&amp;sr=1-2\"><em>The Financial Lives of the Poets<\/em><\/a> (Harper Perennial, 2010).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jesswalter.com\/\">Jess Walter&#8217;s<\/a> work has been translated into more than 20 languages and his essays, short fiction, criticism and journalism have been widely published, in\u00a0<em>Details<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Playboy<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Newsweek<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Washington Post<\/em>, the\u00a0<em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Boston Globe<\/em>\u00a0among many others.\u00a0His nonfiction book,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Every-Knee-Shall-Jess-Walter\/dp\/0061011312\/ref=la_B000APTHRC_1_7?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1354995505&amp;sr=1-7\"><em>Every Knee Shall Bow<\/em>,<\/a> was a finalist for the pen Center West literary nonfiction award in 1996. His novel\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Citizen-Vince-P-S-Jess-Walter\/dp\/0061577650\/ref=la_B000APTHRC_1_3?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1354995505&amp;sr=1-3\"><em>Citizen Vince<\/em>\u00a0<\/a>won a 2006 Edgar Allan Poe award, and his following novel,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Zero-Novel-P-S-Jess-Walter\/dp\/006118943X\/ref=la_B000APTHRC_1_5?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1354995505&amp;sr=1-5\"><em>The Zero<\/em>,<\/a> was a finalist for the 2006 National Book Award.
