Davis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Grocery Cart in Hangman Creek<br \/>\n<em>For Ozzie<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There must have been a whistling<br \/>\nof the stainless webs of steel<br \/>\nas it twisted through the dark<br \/>\nand a scraping of the cart<\/p>\n<p>on the parapet as it was lifted<br \/>\nand cast off to drop 250 feet<br \/>\nfrom Highway 2 traffic-less<br \/>\nin the quiet night.<\/p>\n<p>How it comes to be my joy<br \/>\nin seeing that cart midstream,<br \/>\nspinning the churning water.<br \/>\nI picture the lonely man<\/p>\n<p>full of good humor, angry,<br \/>\nwheeling the wobbly cart<br \/>\nfrom where it had rested<br \/>\nin the gutter up the hill to haul<\/p>\n<p>his rolled up bedding and his pack,<br \/>\ntill at mid-bridge he stopped, lifted<br \/>\nit all over. Heard the whistling<br \/>\nin the dark and strolled off<\/p>\n<p>toward town,<br \/>\nnodding, nonchalant.<br \/>\nSaying \u201chah\u201d a couple times or so.<br \/>\nThat\u2019s the way it was for me.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dioceseofspokane.org\/communications\/ir_2006\/ir082406\/davis.htm\">Tom I. Davis<\/a> was born in the town of Milan on the Little Spokane River in eastern Washington State, has lived in the San Juan Islands and worked in the North Cascade Mountains for the Forest Service.
