Or <em>Salem,<\/em> his lead dog<br \/>\nwho fortified the Iditarod team<br \/>\npast twenty-four village checkpoints,<br \/>\nover two mountain ranges, along the wide<br \/>\nYukon River, up the stretch sliding<br \/>\non the iced-in coast of the Bering Sea,<br \/>\ndown into town, into<\/p>\n<p>the winners circle under flashbulbs and feast lights<br \/>\nand Northern lights, and the beam<br \/>\nof a full moon corona?<br \/>\nFront page photo flash of light yellow roses<br \/>\nin a garland around his neck. This dog\u2019s<\/p>\n<p>the one who ran King\u2019s team loose, after King,<br \/>\non the coldest night<br \/>\ntoppled off the sled. He fell into fatigue\u2019s<br \/>\ndeep snow, struggling to stand, watching<br \/>\nhis rig vanish like a candle guttering in the winter air,<br \/>\nhis life and his victory running away.<\/p>\n<p>Redeeming the space between his lips and teeth King<br \/>\nshrilled across the frozen lay.<br \/>\nWho knows what goes through dogs\u2019 minds?<br \/>\nSurprisingly Salem acquiesced, turned the team.<\/p>\n<p>King re-mounted. Have you<br \/>\nnever once broken free helter-skelter hard<br \/>\non the lip of oblivion?
